Common questions
Is it really free?
Yes. There are no ads, subscriptions or in-app purchases. Beyond Fluency is a non-profit project to raise awareness of stammering.
Does it listen to me or score my speech?
No. It never uses the microphone and never rates fluency. It’s about how life feels, not how speech sounds.
How do I use goals?
Goals are optional. Open them from Today, or from Me, then Your goals.
- Choose something small. Tap “Set a goal” and write something you’d like to do, like ordering a coffee, or a way you’d like to feel, like at ease saying your name. You can start from an idea instead.
- Break it down, if it helps. On the goal’s page, add small steps, like ordering at a quiet café first, and tick them when you like.
- Record moments along the way. When you try it, open the goal and tap “Record a moment for this goal”. To link an earlier moment, edit it and open “Part of a goal”.
- You decide what happens next. Tap “Mark as reached” when it feels right, or “Set it aside for now”. You can pick it back up any time.
Nothing is counted or scored, there are no reminders or deadlines, and a goal you set aside is never marked as failed. In the app, the ⓘ button on Your goals shows these steps again.
Do I need an account or the internet?
No. There’s no sign-up, and the journal works fully offline. Links to support services open in your browser when you choose them.
Where is my journal stored? Can you read it?
Only on your phone, in an encrypted database whose key stays in your phone’s secure storage. We can’t see it, and there’s no copy anywhere else. See the privacy policy.
How do I move my journal to a new phone?
On your old phone, go to Me → Export my journal and save the file somewhere private. Install Beyond Fluency on the new phone, then use Me → Import a copy. The export file isn’t encrypted, so keep it safe and delete it once you’ve imported it.
I lost my phone. Can you restore my journal?
Sorry, we can’t: we never have a copy. If you exported a file before, you can import it on your new phone.
How do I delete everything?
Me → Delete my entries removes your journal from your phone straight away. Uninstalling the app removes everything, including settings.
The app says my journal can’t be opened. What now?
This can happen after restoring a phone backup onto a different phone, because the journal’s key never leaves the original phone. Tap “Try again” first. If it still can’t be opened, “Start a fresh journal” sets the old file aside (it isn’t deleted) and you can import an exported file if you have one.
Can I lock the app?
Yes. Turn on App lock in Me. Your phone checks your Face ID, fingerprint or passcode, and the app never sees that information.
Does it work with VoiceOver, TalkBack and large text?
Yes. Every feeling has a text label as well as a colour and a shape, layouts adapt to large text, and Reduce motion is respected. In Me you can also choose solid surfaces instead of see-through ones. If something doesn’t work for you, please tell us.
Is this therapy?
No. Beyond Fluency is a wellbeing journal for adults (18+). It isn’t therapy, a medical device or an emergency service. For medical advice, talk to your GP or a speech and language therapist.
Stammering communities
Talking with other people who stammer helps many of us. These independent organisations offer information, support groups and events. They haven’t reviewed or endorsed Beyond Fluency, and we aren’t affiliated with them.
