The short version
Your journal stays on your phone, encrypted, unless you export it yourself. The app has no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and we can’t see what you write. We only receive personal information if you email us.
Who we are
Beyond Fluency is a free, non-profit wellbeing app made by Marco Faggiani and Tea Falade, two people who stammer, based in Ireland. For the information described here, we are the data controller. You can reach us at marcofaggiani04@gmail.com.
The app
What the app stores, and where
Your moments, your own words, reflections, goals and their steps, weekly reflection answers, saved phrases and settings are stored only on your phone, in an encrypted database. Its key is held in your phone’s secure storage (the iOS Keychain or the Android Keystore) and is set to stay on that phone.
Some of what you write may be about your health and wellbeing, including that you stammer. That’s exactly why it never leaves your phone through the app.
What we collect through the app
Nothing. There’s no account, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, no crash reporting sent to us, and no AI reading your journal. Beyond Fluency 1.0 doesn’t connect to any server we run. On Android, it doesn’t even ask for permission to use the internet.
Links to other services
The Support tab links to independent organisations, such as stammering associations, helplines and research pages. They open in your browser, phone or messages app, and those services have their own privacy policies. Beyond Fluency doesn’t tell them you came from the app. Listing an organisation doesn’t mean it endorses Beyond Fluency, or that we endorse it.
Exports
You can export your journal as a file (Me → Export my journal). The file is readable, not encrypted, so anyone who has it can read your entries. Where you keep or send it is up to you. Importing a file only adds entries to your phone.
App lock
If you turn on App lock, your phone checks your Face ID, fingerprint or passcode. The app only learns whether the check succeeded. It never receives your biometric data.
Backups, new phones and what can’t be recovered
Because nothing is stored with us, we can’t restore a lost journal. On Android, the journal is left out of phone backups and transfers. On iPhone, a phone backup may contain the encrypted journal file, but never its key, so it can’t be opened on another phone. To move to a new phone, export on the old one and import on the new one.
Deleting your data
- Me → Delete my entries removes your journal from your phone straight away. Deleted entries are overwritten in the database, not just hidden.
- Uninstalling the app removes everything, including settings.
There’s no copy anywhere else for us to delete.
Information from Apple and Google
Apple and Google run the App Store and Google Play, and handle downloads and updates under their own privacy policies.
If you’ve agreed in your phone’s settings to share analytics with app developers, Apple or Google may give us anonymous, combined statistics (such as how many people installed the app) and crash reports. Crash reports contain technical details, such as phone model, system version and where in the app the problem happened. They never contain your journal. We use them only to fix problems, and we can’t link them to you.
- iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements → Share With App Developers.
- Android: the “Usage & diagnostics” setting in your phone’s Google settings.
If you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and anything you choose to include. We use it only to reply, and to fix or improve the app. We never add you to a mailing list or share your message with anyone else.
Please don’t send journal entries, or health details you’d rather keep private. If you do tell us about your health, for example that you stammer, we use it only to answer you.
- Legal basis: our legitimate interest in answering you and looking after the app (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). Where your message includes health information, we rely on your explicit consent in choosing to send it (Article 9(2)(a)). You can withdraw that consent by asking us to delete your messages.
- How long we keep it: we delete emails 12 months after our last exchange, unless we need them longer to deal with a complaint or a legal claim.
- Who else handles it: our email uses Gmail, provided by Google. Google may store messages outside the EEA, including in the United States; those transfers rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses and the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
This website
This website doesn’t use cookies, analytics, advertising, social media plug-ins or embedded content, and its fonts are served from this site rather than from another company.
Like every website, it’s delivered by a hosting provider, Vercel Inc., in the United States. When you visit, Vercel receives your IP address and basic browser details so it can send you the page and protect the site against abuse, and it keeps those server logs only as long as it needs them for that. [Transfers to the US: Standard Contractual Clauses under Vercel’s data processing agreement, which needs a Pro plan.] The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running a secure website (Article 6(1)(f)). We don’t use these logs to identify visitors.
Your rights
Your journal is on your phone and fully under your control: you can see it, export a copy, change it or delete it at any time in the app. We hold no copy of it.
For anything we do hold, such as emails you’ve sent us, you have the right to:
- get a copy of it, and have it corrected;
- have it deleted, or its use restricted;
- object to how we use it;
- receive it in a portable format.
Email marcofaggiani04@gmail.com and we’ll reply within one month. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Data Protection Commission in Ireland (www.dataprotection.ie) or to the data protection authority where you live.
Who the app is for
Beyond Fluency is for adults (18 and over). It isn’t designed for children, and we don’t knowingly receive information from anyone under 18.
Not a medical service
Beyond Fluency is a wellbeing journal. It isn’t therapy, a medical device or an emergency service, and it doesn’t diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. For medical advice, talk to your GP or a speech and language therapist. If you’re in danger or need urgent help, call 112 or 999 in Ireland and the UK, or your local emergency number.
If this policy changes
If a future version offers anything that leaves your phone, such as an optional backup, it will be off by default and explained before you choose it. We’ll update this policy before that version is released, and show the new date at the top.
